From Cruise Port: Hobart
We depart Hobart city and head north along the banks of the Derwent River, named after the River Derwent in Cumbria England. The banks were once covered by forests and had been occupied by Tasmanian Aborigines for over 8000 year prior to European settlers clearing the land for farming in the early 1800's.
Crossing the river at Bridgewater, our first destination today is Bonorong Wildlife Park. Bonorong offers a chance to come face to face with animals that went extinct long ago in other parts of Australia - the same animals we're working hard to protect now here in Tasmania.
You will see Kangaroos, Wombats, Koalas and of course the Tasmanian Devil. There are many other native species, such as Echidna, Bettongs, Eastern Quolls and a number of bird species at the reserve.
Next, a short drive takes us to the small historic town of Richmond which is one of Tasmania's most popular destinations, steeped in history, family-friendly and a hub for food and wine lovers. Nestled in the heart of the Coal River Valley, Richmond was established as an important military staging post and convict station linking Hobart with Port Arthur. Famous for its elegant Georgian architecture, with beautiful heritage buildings now housing galleries, tea shops, craft boutiques and museums.
You have time in Richmond to amble through town, shopping and sampling local produce, enjoy lunch at one of the many cafes [your cost] and explore some of the historic buildings, such as the town Gaol [$10 entry fee].
Leaving Richmond, we return to Hobart by another route, re-crossing the Derwent River, through the city and head up to the peak of Mount Wellington, 1,271 metres (4,170 ft) above sea level. It is frequently covered by snow, even in summer! An enclosed lookout near the summit has views of the city below and to the east, the Derwent estuary, and also glimpses of the World Heritage Area nearly 100 kilometres west. From Hobart, the most distinctive feature of Mount Wellington is the cliff of dolerite columns known as the Organ Pipes.
We then head back down into the city and the cruise terminal, but you can depart the tour to explore the Port and Salamanca Markets, just a short walk back to the ship.

Will it be cold on top of Mount Wellington?
It can get quite chilly even in summer due to the height of the mountain, so we suggest you do bring a warm jacket, even if the weather seems fine in the city.
How long would I have to explore Hobart after the tour?
It depends on the departure time of your cruise ship, but usually about an hour. Its just a 10 minute walk back to the ship from the main historic area of Hobart.
